Government of Colombia Announces First International Conference for the Phase-Out of Fossil Fuels in April 2026

22nd September 2025 - New York City – On 24th of September, during the UN General Assembly, the Secretary-General António Guterres will be hosting a special event on climate. Spring-boarding off this event, the Governments of Colombia and Vanuatu will hold a press conference at the UN Headquarters to announce the First International Conference for the Phase-Out of Fossil Fuels, to be held in Colombia in April 2026. 

The landmark conference will provide a global platform for countries to cooperate on strategies to phase out oil, gas and coal extraction, complementing and reinforcing the Paris Agreement. It also aligns with the historic International Court of Justice Advisory Opinion (ICJAO), which recognizes States’ legal obligation to protect the climate system, including by addressing fossil fuel production.
