Endorse the Fossil Fuel Treaty Now.

Sri Lanka is at a critical moment in its history. As our island nation grapples with economic challenges, we are also facing the devastating impacts of climate change. The past few years have brought extreme weather events, including severe floods, landslides, and prolonged droughts that have upended lives, destroyed livelihoods, and drained our economy. The message is clear: we must act now to secure our future.

At the heart of the climate crisis is fossil fuel dependence—our continued reliance on coal, oil, and gas is accelerating global warming and making our communities more vulnerable. But Sri Lanka has a unique opportunity to lead the charge in the global fight against climate change by endorsing the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty.

The Fossil Fuel Treaty complements the Paris Agreement and is a bold step forward in tackling the root cause of climate change—fossil fuel expansion. It’s a global, legally binding commitment to end new fossil fuel projects, manage the fair and equitable phase-out of existing fossil fuels, and ensure a just transition to renewable energy, where no worker or community is left behind.

Sri Lanka’s natural resources—our sun, wind, and waves—position us perfectly to transition to renewable energy, creating sustainable jobs, reducing energy poverty, and building resilience against climate shocks.
