1,000,000+ ENDORSEMENTS OF THE FOSSIL FUEL TREATY INITIATIVE

Millions have endorsed the Fossil Fuel Treaty as a way to signal their support for a fast, fair and fully funded transition away from oil, gas and coal. This includes Indigenous nations, subnational and local governments, parliamentarians and elected officials, civil society organisations, businesses, scientists and academics, faith leaders, other public figures and individuals from every corner of the globe.

Countries participating in discussions to develop a Fossil Fuel Treaty are showing their support for an international agreement to accelerate a global just transition to phase out oil, gas and coal; and are demonstrating their willingness to cooperate to achieve it.

Subnational governments and cities that endorse the proposal are also sending a strong signal to higher levels of government that action is urgently needed. They are showing they can walk the talk by taking steps to phase out fossil fuels and promote diversified, accessible renewable energy and other sustainable options.

When organizations and individuals endorse the proposal for a Fossil Fuel Treaty, they are letting their government officials in all levels know there is public demand for change and that civil society will remain steadfast in holding decision makers accountable.

145 sub-national governments around the world are making bold moves to phase out the leading cause of the climate crisis: fossil fuels.

Just as nuclear-free cities played a critical role in building momentum towards a treaty banning weapons of mass destruction, now councils around the world are uniting to call for a Fossil Fuel Treaty.

37 Indigenous Nations

Indigenous Peoples and organisations from multiple regions of the world are supporting the Fossil Fuel Treaty initiative in a shared call to protect territories, biodiversity, cultures and future generations from fossil fuel extraction.

The Fossil Fuel Treaty Initiative recognises Indigenous Peoples as rights-holders under international law, including the right to self-determination, to their lands and territories, and to free, prior, and informed consent. The ultimate objective is to ensure Indigenous Peoples participate in shaping the future Fossil Fuel Treaty on an equal footing with nation states.

In the Amazon Basin, Indigenous Nations and organisations from Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, and Bolivia are calling for a Fossil Fuel Treaty.  They are joined by the Maasai community of Kajiado County in Kenya and more than 25 Indigenous and community-based groups in South Asia representing peoples across West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Jharkhand. The Chhattisgarh in India have also expressed their support.

This includes the World Health Organization, Global Witness, Amnesty International and hundreds of other international organizations. Thousands of national and local groups in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and Carribean, North America, Oceania have joined as well, representing a broad range of sectors from climate and health to faith, gender rights, social justice, banking and arts.

Public Figures

More than one million individuals have endorsed the call for a Fossil Fuel Treaty. This includes thousands of scientists, economists and academics, Nobel Laureates as well as faith, civil society, cultural, business and other leaders and public figures. 

From climate scientist Michael Mann to Vatican Cardinals, Ban Ki Moon, Vandana Shiva and David Suzuki, these Fossil Fuel Treaty Champions are using their voices to spread the message via the media, social media and public events.
