19 September 2023, New-York - The day before the UNSG climate Summit, where the need to move away from fossil fuel production has been repeatedly mentioned as a central way to tackle the climate crisis, 9 Peruvian Indigenous nations also called for the implementation of a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty.
The support from these Indigenous nations come two days after an unprecedented global mobilisation demanding #EndFossilFuels #FastFairForever, at an event entitled "Safeguarding the Amazon: A Call for a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Zone", bringing together Indigenous leaders, civil society experts and two ministers who demanded the creation of an “Amazon Fossil Fuel Free Zone."
The Awajún, Achuar, Candozi, Chapra, Kichwa del Pastaza, Kukama Kukamiria, Shawi, Shiwilu and Wampís nations add their voices to those of the countries that directly called for a fossil fuel phase-out at today's UNSG summit, and the 6 Pacific nation-states already supporting the adoption of a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty.
Elaine Shajian Shawit, President of the Regional Coordinating Committee of Indigenous Peoples of San Lorenzo (CORPI SL): “It is important that the world knows that the indigenous peoples of Peru and the world do not agree with oil exploration in their territories because of the constant spills and damage to the Amazon. The fossil fuel industry, financiers and decision-makers who enable exploitation should know that they are violating communities’ rights. A Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty would guarantee the protection of Amazonian territories and indigenous peoples - recognised in ILO Convention 169 - as well as the protection of the environment and the global climate. Protecting the Amazon is protecting the planet.”
Augusto Duran, Regional Coordinator for the Fossil Fuel Treaty initiative - MOCICC, Peru, said: "The declaration of 9 indigenous nations of Peru calling for a Fossil Fuels Non-Proliferation Treaty to stop oil extraction in their territories sets a precedent in the process for the implementation of a Treaty. The adoption of this international agreement is key because it will support the immediate proposals and demands of the communities directly affected by the fossil fuel industry. With this statement, Amazonian nations join the Pacific nations and call together on decision makers to support the growing global demand for a Fossil Fuels Non-Proliferation Treaty."
