On 23 March, our partners from Rise For Climate, along with European NGOs, scientists and youth organisations, gathered outside the European Council of Heads of State in Brussels to call on the 27 Member States to endorse the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty proposal.
Europe is currently in the midst of a fossil fuel dependency crisis which underlines the urgency to phase out oil, gas and coal, both for the European continent and for other parts of the world. As one of the Global North historical contributors to the climate crisis, European countries have a responsibility to transition first and fastest, while also supporting fossil fuel dependent economies with less capacity to transition.
The next European Council summit will take place on 29 and 30 June, and in partnership with Stop Ecocide and Fridays For Future, Rise for Climate will hold a new rally on 29 June, 6pm, on the eve of a summer that is likely to break all records for heat and tragedy in Europe and around the world.
European countries need to take bold action to accelerate measures to protect nature, the climate and humanity, all of which require an end to fossil fuel production.
