Africa is at the frontlines of the global polycrisis. The current global economic and political system is not alleviating these crises but rather - on the whole - reinforcing debt, economic dependency, extractivism, patriarchy and inequality. Trapped in an economic architecture designed to drain wealth and resources to the Global North, African nations are forced into austerity and resource extraction, with women and girls paying the heaviest price. This report examines how these systems intersect, and is rooted in the expertise that has been shared across the continent for some time. As an initiative invested in a just and equitable transition away from fossil fuels, the report offers important considerations for how a Fossil Fuel Treaty could support a just transition that advances climate, economic, and gender justice.

The launch of this report will take place on the eve of The seventieth session of the Commission on the Status of Women, whose focus will be on ensuring access to justice for women and girls.

The webinar will explore:

  • How debt and fossil fuel dependency are rooted in systems of oppression and reinforce gender injustice

  • The relationship between patriarchy, fossil fuels and gendered violence

  • How women leaders across the continent are designing just, alternative futures for the continent and the world

  • Key findings and recommendations from the report, with reflections from African experts, including its authors and contributors
