Why nature needs a Fossil Fuel Treaty: A Webinar Briefing on IUCN Motion 42

Oct 1, 2025 | 11am Brasilia time / 10am ET | Virtual

For the first time in its history, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) will vote on a motion that tackles the root cause of the climate and biodiversity crises: fossil fuels.

Join WWF and the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative for a one-hour briefing on Motion 42, which calls on IUCN to develop analysis, guidance, and just transition pathways to address fossil fuel supply.

This webinar will:

  • Explain the link between fossil fuels and biodiversity loss

  • Break down what Motion 42 asks and why it matters

  • Share tools to help IUCN members caucus and vote

  • Provide communications assets for amplifying the motion ahead of Congress

This is a unique opportunity to align, prepare, and build momentum before the IUCN World Conservation Congress (Oct 9–15, Abu Dhabi) — where members can make history by putting fossil fuels on the global conservation agenda.
