Fossil Fuel Treaty Initiative’s statement concerning Harjeet Singh
7 January 2026
7 January 2026, New Delhi, India - In light of recent allegations concerning Harjeet Singh's work as advisor to the Fossil Fuel Treaty Initiative, we reiterate that our work consists of building mechanisms for just, orderly and equitable energy transitions, and to that end supporting countries, particularly developing and vulnerable nations, in moving towards more secure and accessible energy systems.
Alex Rafalowicz, Global Director of the Fossil Fuel Treaty Initiative:
“We understand that Harjeet Singh was detained overnight and granted bail the following day by the competent authority, after consideration of the merits of the case. We are concerned by the news and are following the situation closely. We are awaiting the outcome of the investigation and are not in a position to comment on specific aspects at this time.We also want to clarify that equity and justice are at the core of the Fossil Fuel Treaty Initiative’s work. Our vision is to ensure energy security for all peoples and countries in a manner that also secures climate justice.”
Tzeporah Berman, Founder and Chair of the Fossil Fuel Treaty Initiative:
“The proposed concept for the Treaty clearly articulates the principle of common but differentiated historical responsibilities for the climate crisis, recognising the need for different pathways and timelines towards a global just transition to phase out fossil fuels. The proposal intends to support developing countries — including India — through international cooperation, economic diversification, access to finance, and technology transfer. Our purpose is to advance, fair, and orderly transitions to renewable and accessible energy systems, with a particular focus on those most in need. 18 countries, all from the Global South, are already supporting the initiative on an entirely voluntary basis, and we do not seek to pressure any developing country to join. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and will share further information as appropriate.”
About the Fossil Fuel Treaty InitiativeThe Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative is spurring international cooperation to end new development of fossil fuels, phase out existing production within the agreed climate limit of 1.5°C and develop plans to support workers, communities and countries dependent on fossil fuels to create secure and healthy livelihoods. Donate NowThe Governments of Colombia and the Netherlands have announced their plan to co-host the First International Conference for the Phase-Out of Fossil Fuels next year.
The landmark convening will take place on 28–29 April 2026, in the port city of Santa Marta, Colombia, which plays a significant role in coal exports. This will be followed by a second convening led by Pacific nation-states.
Its purpose is to advance international cooperation on transitioning away from fossil fuel extraction.
Helping ensure there is a significant presence of civil society, technical experts, trade unions and Global South governments at the conference will come with significant logistical costs. Can you help chip into our Conference fund to ensure there is a strong presence of those pushing for fast and fair transition to fossil free future in Santa Marta in April?
