SUSANA MUHAMMAD APPOINTED SPECIAL ENVOY FOR THE FOSSIL FUEL TREATY INITIATIVE

International Cooperation towards a Fossil Fuel Treaty

The proposed standalone conference pathway for a Fossil Fuel Treaty being considered presents critical opportunities to spark new forms of innovative multilateralism to address the impact of fossil fuels. This will benefit from a special envoy that can both strengthen the engagement of states, diplomats and regions in the treaty process, while creating public momentum behind the proposed treaty.

Susana Muhamad has been a leading advocate of the Fossil Fuel Treaty proposal for years. As Minister, she developed Colombia’s endorsement of the proposal at COP28 in Dubai, as the first major fossil fuel producer to participate in the initiative. She has a wealth of experience in multilateral processes, most recently as CBD COP16 President.. This Special Envoy role will give Susana Muhamad an additional platform to draw attention to the need for a managed and equitable phase-out of fossil fuels, while helping embolden states to drive the transition from fossil fuels, in the face of strong headwinds against the agenda. It will support Susana in engaging government officials and Ministers, including those from current participating nations and beyond, who are committed to upholding international cooperation as well as the imperative to phase out fossil fuels. It will also allow Susana to be a high-profile spokespeople for the initiative.
